There is a small logo on the Ashnoor label that most buyers have stopped seeing: a squarish +F. It is easy to miss and worth a minute of your attention, because it represents one of the quietest, largest public-health programmes running through Indian kitchens — and it changes absolutely nothing about how your oil cooks.

Why oil became the carrier

Vitamins A and D are fat-soluble: they travel in fat, absorb with fat, store in fat. If you wanted to deliver a micronutrient to almost every plate in the country — across incomes, regions and diets — you would look for the one ingredient that reaches nearly every kitchen nearly every day. Cereals change by region. Milk does not reach everyone. Cooking oil does. Fortifying the daily vehicle beats persuading a billion people to remember a tablet.

What actually goes in

Fortification under FSSAI's standards adds vitamins A and D in micrograms per litre — quantities meaningful to nutrition and invisible to cooking. The oil's colour does not shift. The aroma does not change. The pungency panel cannot tell a fortified batch from an unfortified one, and neither will your tadka. The bite you smell when the kadhai warms is untouched; the vitamins simply ride along.

What it does not do

  1. 1It does not turn oil into a supplement, or replace one prescribed to you.
  2. 2It is not a licence to use more oil — the dose assumes normal cooking quantities.
  3. 3It does not alter taste, smoke behaviour, or shelf life.
  4. 4It does not make an otherwise careless oil trustworthy. Fortification is one line on the label, not the whole label.

How to spot it

Look for the +F logo and the words fortified with Vitamin A and D on the pack, alongside the licence details. In a responsible pack, the fortification claim should be supported through records and checks rather than treated as decoration. Trust, as the trade keeps teaching us, is not one grand gesture. It is a stack of small verifications, repeated consistently.
